Speech and Language Communication Needs in Children and Young People

Why?
The ability to communicate easily and effectively is often taken for granted, butthe processes behind this are complex and breakdown can happen at many different levels.Approximately 10% of children and young people in the UK have long term Speech Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) which cause them significant difficulties with communicating with others or learning in everyday life.

What are the benefits?
The course provides an overview of children and young people’s communication needs and the impact these can have on their developmental and educational outcomes, health and wellbeing. Consideration will be given to particular groups that are at increased risk of SLCN, including children excluded from school, children looked after or care experienced, children who have experienced adversity or trauma, children in the criminal justice system.

Participants will gain the following knowledge:
An overview of the building blocks of elements of communication i.e.,
understanding language (making sense of what people say)
using language (words and sentences, giving explanations)
interacting with others and differences in communication styles.
How language and communication needs might present in children and young people and recognising these differences.
Discussion on how these can impact on their daily life.
How to support and empower children and young people with SLCN including strategies that can be used.

Aimed at: People working with Children and young people in any setting, including education, social care.

Duration:

The length of this course is flexible. It is normally 2 hours duration.
